Lovable vs Replit
Pick Lovable if you do not write code and want a working web app with login and a database from a chat window. Its free plan gives 5 build credits a day, Pro starts at $25 a month, and the backend comes with it through Lovable Cloud.
Pick Replit if you want the code in front of you and expect to edit it, run scripts, or grow beyond a single web app. The free Starter plan only runs the Lite build mode and keeps one published app online for 30 days, so plan on Core at $20 a month ($18 billed yearly) for real work.

What each tool actually is
Lovable is a chat-to-app builder. You describe the app, it writes the front end and the backend, and you keep talking to it to change things. The product is built around people who never open the code, although Lovable states that you own the code and the AI output you generate.
Replit started as an online code editor and grew an AI agent on top. When you ask Replit Agent for an app, it builds the project inside a full workspace: files, a terminal, a database and a publishing button all sit in the same window. You can ignore the code, but it is always one click away.
That difference shapes everything below. Lovable hides the engineering so you can move fast without it. Replit shows the engineering so you can take over when the agent gets stuck.
Free plans: how far you get before paying
Both tools let you start for free, but they ration different things.
- Lovable Free: 5 build credits a day, capped at 30 a month, plus 20 Cloud credits a month for hosting and backend use. Every message that changes your app spends credits, so 5 a day is enough to try an idea, not to finish a product.
- Replit Starter: daily credits for Agent with a monthly cap, but only the Lite build mode. Full build needs Core or Pro. You can publish one app, it carries a "Made with Replit" badge, and the free published link goes down after 30 days.
In practice, Lovable's free plan is better for judging whether the tool understands your idea. Replit's free plan is better for poking around a real project and learning how the pieces fit, but it is not meant to host anything you want to keep online.
Paid plans and how credits work
Lovable Pro costs $25 a month. Replit Core costs $20 a month, or $18 a month billed yearly, and includes $20 of usage credit toward the most capable AI models.
The sticker price is only half the story, because both products charge for AI work in credits. The number that matters is how many changes you can make before you run out. A small, well-scoped app uses far fewer credits than one where you keep asking the AI to fix its own mistakes.
Three habits keep credit use down on either tool:
- Write one clear request with the screens, fields and rules you want, instead of ten small corrections.
- Ask for one feature at a time and check it before asking for the next.
- When the agent loops on the same bug, stop and describe the bug in plain words rather than repeating "fix it".
If you only build on weekends, start on the monthly plan and cancel when you are done. Both vendors change plan limits often, so check the linked pricing pages before you subscribe.
Backend, hosting and who owns the code
Lovable bundles the backend through Lovable Cloud: database, user accounts and hosting are set up for you as part of the build. Hosting an app on Lovable is covered by the included credit grants for typical apps, according to its pricing page.
Replit bills production databases, storage and publishing from your plan's credits. The upside is control: you can see every file, add packages, and run things that are not a standard web app, such as scheduled scripts or an API.
On ownership, both are clear. Lovable says you own the code and the AI output. On Replit the whole project sits in your workspace, so the code is already in your hands. If you think you might hand the project to a developer later, either path works; Replit makes the handover simpler because the developer can work in the same place you did.
Choose Lovable if
- You have never written code and do not plan to start.
- Your app is a web app: a client portal, a booking tool, a dashboard, a small SaaS idea.
- You want login, a database and hosting without choosing providers.
- You care more about seeing a working version this week than about how it is built.
Choose Replit if
- You can read a little code, or want to learn while you build.
- You expect to go beyond one web app: an API, a bot, a script that runs on a schedule.
- You want a developer to be able to pick up the project in the same workspace later.
- You are fine paying for Core to unlock Full build and keep apps online.
Not sure? A two-hour test
Write one paragraph describing your app: who uses it, the three screens it needs, and what data it saves. Paste the same paragraph into both tools on their free plans and give each an hour. Then ask yourself two questions: which result is closer to what you described, and in which tool did you understand what was going wrong when something broke?
The tool that wins the second question is usually the one you will still be using in three months. If neither feels right, our Lovable alternatives list covers builders aimed at mobile apps, local open-source building and full coding agents, and the Finder narrows the field from four questions.
Questions people ask
Is Lovable or Replit better for beginners?
For someone who does not code, Lovable is the easier start: you work in a chat window and the backend is set up for you. Replit suits beginners who want to learn how the code works, because the files and terminal are always visible.
Which is cheaper, Lovable or Replit?
Replit Core is $20 a month ($18 billed yearly) and Lovable Pro is $25 a month. Both charge AI work in credits, so the real cost depends on how many changes you ask for. Check both pricing pages before you subscribe, since limits change often.
Can I keep my app online for free?
On Replit Starter, the one free published app goes offline after 30 days. Lovable's free plan includes 20 Cloud credits a month, and its pricing page says the included grants cover hosting for typical apps. For anything you rely on, budget for a paid plan on either tool.
Do I own the code I build?
Yes on both. Lovable states that you own your code and AI output. On Replit, the project files live in your own workspace.
