Lovable vs Claude Code

Pick Lovable if you do not write code and want a web app with login, a database and hosting set up for you. You work in a chat window, the free plan gives 5 build credits a day, and Pro starts at $25 a month.

Pick Claude Code if you are comfortable inside a code project and want an agent that writes and runs code in your own files. It is not part of the free Claude plan, starts with Claude Pro at $20 a month ($17 billed yearly), and comes with no hosting or database, so you pick and pay for those yourself.

Two different kinds of tool

People search "Lovable vs Claude Code" as if they were rivals, but they sit on different sides of a line.

Lovable is an app builder. You describe the app, it writes the front end and the backend, and it runs the result on Lovable Cloud. The database, user accounts and hosting are part of the product. You never have to open a file, although Lovable states you own the code and the AI output.

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It works in your terminal, your IDE, a desktop app or the browser, and it edits files in a project or repo that you control. It can build almost anything: a web app, a mobile app, a backend, a script. What it does not do is give you a place to run that code. There is no built-in database, no login system and no hosting.

So the real question is not "which AI is smarter". It is "do I want a platform that hides the engineering, or an agent that does engineering work inside my own setup?"

Free access: what you can try today

  • Lovable Free: 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month, plus 20 Cloud credits a month for hosting and backend use. Enough to see whether it understands your idea.
  • Claude Code: not included in the free Claude plan. To use it you need a paid Claude plan, starting with Pro.

If you want to test the idea before spending anything, Lovable is the only one of the two that lets you do that.

Paid plans and the costs that are not on the sticker

Claude Pro, which includes Claude Code, costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Lovable Pro costs $25 a month.

On paper Claude Code looks cheaper. In practice the bill is shaped differently:

  • With Lovable, the monthly plan covers building, and hosting for a typical app runs on included Cloud credits. Your main cost is how many changes you ask for.
  • With Claude Code, the subscription covers the agent only. You still need somewhere to host the app and a database for its data, and you choose and pay for those yourself. Many hosts have free tiers, but you have to set them up.

The hidden cost on the Claude Code side is time. Someone has to connect a database, set up login, deploy, and fix things when a deploy fails. If that someone is you and you do not read code, budget a lot of that time.

Backend, hosting and who owns the code

Lovable bundles the backend through Lovable Cloud: database, auth and hosting come with the build. That is the main reason non-coders pick it.

Claude Code has no backend of its own. It will happily write the code that talks to a database or adds login, but you supply the services. The upside is freedom: you are not tied to one platform, and the agent can work on any kind of codebase, including mobile apps and backend services that Lovable does not target.

On ownership, both are clear. Lovable states you own your code and AI output. Claude Code edits files in your own project, so the code never leaves your hands in the first place.

Choose Lovable if

  • You have never written code and do not want to learn deployment.
  • You need a web app with login and saved data: a portal, a dashboard, a booking tool, a small SaaS idea.
  • You want to try your idea for free before paying.
  • You would rather pay a bit more each month than pick hosting and database providers.

Choose Claude Code if

  • You can read code, or work with someone who can.
  • You want a mobile app, an API, a script or anything that is not a standard web app.
  • You already have a codebase and want an agent to work inside it.
  • You want to choose your own hosting and database and not depend on one builder.

A common path is to start in Lovable, export the code once the idea is proven, then keep developing it with a coding agent like Claude Code. If you are weighing editors too, see Lovable vs Cursor.

Not sure? A two-hour test

Write one paragraph about your app: who uses it, the three screens it needs, and what data it saves. Give Lovable that paragraph on its free plan and spend an hour on it.

If you already pay for Claude, give Claude Code the same paragraph in an empty folder and see how far you get in an hour, including getting it to run somewhere other people can open it. If the second half of that hour is spent on setup errors you cannot read, you have your answer.

Questions people ask

Can Claude Code replace Lovable?

For someone who reads code, often yes: it can write the same kind of web app and much more. For a non-coder, not really, because Claude Code has no built-in hosting, database or login, and you have to set those up yourself.

Is Claude Code free?

No. Claude Code is not included in the free Claude plan. It starts with Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly.

Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Code?

You do not need to type code, but you need to be comfortable in a code project: reading errors, running commands and setting up hosting. Lovable is built for people who want to skip all of that.

Can I move a Lovable project to Claude Code later?

Lovable states you own your code, so you can take it out and keep working on it with a coding agent like Claude Code. You would then need to arrange your own hosting and database outside Lovable Cloud.
