App builder or coding agent?

The tools here fall into two groups, and picking the right group matters more than picking the right brand.

AI app builders such as Lovable, Base44, Bolt, Replit and Emergent are platforms. You describe the app in a chat window, and they write the code, set up the database and user accounts, and host the result. You trade some control for speed, and you pay the platform every month.

AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Cursor work on a normal code project on your computer or in your repository. They do not host anything; you choose where the app runs and which database it uses. They suit people who can read code, or who have a developer to lean on.

If you have never written code, start with an app builder. If you already have a codebase, or your app has outgrown a builder, a coding agent is usually the next step.

How we check the facts

Every price and limit on this site comes from the vendor's own pricing page or documentation, and each comparison page links those sources with the date we checked them. When we could not confirm a tool's details on an official page, we left the tool out rather than guess. Credits and plans change often, so always check the vendor page before you pay. Questions people ask

What is the best AI app builder?

There is no single best one; it depends on what you are building and whether you code. For a web app without code, Lovable and Base44 are the usual starting points. For a mobile app, Emergent. If you can work in a code project, Claude Code or Cursor give you the most control. The Finder above weighs those trade-offs for you.

Are these AI builders free?

Most have a free plan with limited credits or tokens, enough to test an idea but rarely enough to finish and host a real app. Dyad is free and open source if you bring your own AI keys. Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan.

Do you get paid by these companies?

Some vendors run referral programs, and if we join one we may earn a commission when you pay. It never changes the tables or the Finder, which score every tool by the same rules. See the About page for details.
