Lovable vs Cursor

Pick Lovable if you do not code and want a finished web app with login, a database and hosting from a chat window. The free plan gives 5 build credits a day and Pro is $25 a month.

Pick Cursor if you already work in code and want AI inside a familiar editor. Pro is $20 a month and your code stays on your machine, but there is no hosting or database included, so you bring your own.

An app builder and a code editor

Lovable and Cursor both use AI to write software, but they are built for different people.

Lovable is a chat-to-app builder. You describe what you want, it builds the front end and backend, and it runs the app on Lovable Cloud. You can ship without ever looking at a file.

Cursor is an AI code editor with an agent built in. It looks and works like a programmer's editor: files on the left, code in the middle, an AI that can write, explain and change that code. It works on any codebase, including mobile apps. But it assumes you understand what you are looking at, and it does not run your app for you.

If you have never opened a code editor, Cursor will feel like being handed a cockpit. If you write code every day, Lovable may feel like it hides too much.

Free plans compared

  • Lovable Free: 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month, plus 20 Cloud credits a month for hosting and backend use.
  • Cursor Hobby: limited Agent requests and Tab completions.

Both free tiers are for trying the tool, not for finishing a product. Lovable's free plan can put a small app online. Cursor's free plan helps you write code, but getting that code online is a separate job.

Paid plans and what you pay for outside them

Cursor Pro costs $20 a month. Lovable Pro costs $25 a month.

  • Lovable includes the backend and hosting through Lovable Cloud, so the plan covers most of what a simple app needs.
  • Cursor covers the editor and its AI. Hosting, a database and login are up to you, picked and paid for separately.

So the cheaper sticker is not always the cheaper project. For a non-coder, the real cost of Cursor is the time spent on setup, deploys and errors. For a developer who already has hosting they like, Cursor's price is close to the whole bill.

Backend, hosting and who owns the code

Lovable bundles database, auth and hosting through Lovable Cloud, and states that you own your code and the AI output.

Cursor has no backend of its own. Your code stays on your machine, which means full ownership and full freedom over where it runs, along with full responsibility for running it.

The two also work well in sequence. Many people build a first version in a no-code builder, take the code out once the idea works, then keep going in an editor like Cursor. The same logic applies to Claude Code, compared in Lovable vs Claude Code.

Choose Lovable if

  • You do not write code and do not plan to.
  • Your project is a web app: a portal, a dashboard, a booking tool, a small SaaS idea.
  • You want login, a database and hosting set up without picking providers.
  • You want to see a working version before you pay anything.

Choose Cursor if

  • You are a developer, or you are learning to code and want AI help in a real editor.
  • You already have a codebase and want AI to work inside it.
  • You need something beyond a web app, such as a mobile app or a backend service.
  • You want your code on your own machine and your own choice of hosting.

Not sure? A two-hour test

Write one paragraph about your app: who uses it, the three screens it needs, and what data it saves. Spend an hour with it in Lovable on the free plan.

Then open Cursor, start an empty project and give its agent the same paragraph. The test is not whether Cursor writes the code; it usually will. The test is whether you can get that code running at a link a friend can open, within the hour. If you cannot, Lovable is the better tool for you right now.

Questions people ask

Is Cursor better than Lovable?

For developers, Cursor is the more flexible tool because it works on any codebase. For non-coders, Lovable is the better fit because it builds, hosts and stores data for you without touching code.

Can a non-coder use Cursor?

You can, but it is hard going. Cursor is a code editor, and it does not include hosting or a database. You will need to read errors, run commands and set up where the app runs.

Is Cursor free?

Cursor has a free Hobby plan with limited Agent requests and Tab completions. Pro is $20 a month.

Can I use Lovable and Cursor together?

Yes. Lovable states you own your code, so a common path is to build the first version in Lovable, then keep developing the code in Cursor once you need more control.
