FilmCraft vs Premiere Pro: what works today
FilmCraft is a free, open-source video editor built to feel like Premiere Pro: the same panels, tools and shortcuts, on macOS, Windows and Linux. It is written in Rust down to its own video codecs, with no FFmpeg inside.
Its developers measured it on 2026-10-10 at about 86% of Premiere Pro's feature breadth but only about 56% "ready for real work". It cannot open .prproj files yet and has no plug-ins. Fine for learning and personal projects; not yet for paid edits on deadline.
What FilmCraft is
FilmCraft is the Premiere Pro entry in ArtCraft's twelve "Crafting Apps". It is a non-linear editor for people who already know Premiere: source and program monitors, three-point editing, every trim mode and J/K/L dynamic trimming.
- Frame-exact time: an integer timebase keeps 23.976 and 29.97 drop-frame exact, so edits do not drift.
- Its own codecs: H.264, HEVC, ProRes, VP9, AAC and Opus written from the public specifications.
- Color: curves, color wheels, HSL secondaries, LUTs, HDR and log workflows, with scopes.
- Effects: the README lists Premiere's full Video Effects bin (93 effects in 16 folders) plus around 30 transitions; the official page counts about 55 video effects, so the two use different counts. Keyframes come with value and velocity graphs.
- Audio: EBU R128 loudness meters, a mixer with automation and native effects.
- Captions: Subtitle, CEA-608, CEA-708 and Teletext tracks; SRT, WebVTT and SCC import and export.
- Shortcut presets for FilmCraft, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and Avid layouts.
FilmCraft vs Premiere Pro, by the developers' own numbers
| Measure | FilmCraft |
|---|---|
| Premiere features present | About 86% (menus 92%, effects 100%) |
| Ready for real work | About 56% |
| Measured against | Premiere Pro 26.5.2, on 2026-10-10 |
Editing, trimming, multicam, color, keyframes, effects, titles, captions, mixing and export all work today, according to the README. The second number is lower because of speed, file compatibility and delivery formats, covered next.
The gaps that matter
- No Premiere project import. .prproj files cannot be opened. Move sequences across as Final Cut Pro 7 XML, AAF or OTIO instead.
- No plug-ins. No VST3, Audio Units or OpenFX hosting.
- Export formats. H.264 is the only software delivery codec. H.265 export needs a hardware encoder (NVIDIA on Windows, VideoToolbox on macOS). No AV1 export yet.
- Speed on big footage. Hardware decoding works, but Lumetri-style color, keys and export rendering still run on the CPU.
- Real-world media. The decoders are tested on standard test streams; camera and phone files are less tested, and Windows and Linux get less testing than macOS.
- AI features. Few so far; speech to text is optional and off by default.
Moving a Premiere project to FilmCraft
Since .prproj does not open, export the sequence from Premiere as Final Cut Pro XML (File, Export, Final Cut Pro XML). FilmCraft reads FCP7 XML with nested sequences, transitions, motion, opacity, time remapping and audio levels, including keyframes. Relink your media, then check effects and color by eye: anything beyond the basics may not carry over exactly.
Download and install
Use the official FilmCraft page or the GitHub releases. Install through the ArtCraft Launcher or the standalone installer (version 0.6.0 when we checked).
- macOS: universal disk image.
- Windows: installer or portable zip for 64-bit, 32-bit and ARM64.
- Linux: Flatpak, AppImage, .deb, .rpm or tarball.
- Browser: the README says each release also ships a WebAssembly build.
For automation: 650+ commands an agent can run
Every menu item, button and slider is a command with typed parameters, more than 650 of them. The app, a command-line tool, a JSON control channel and an MCP server share them, so Claude or another agent can cut, trim, grade, mix and export a timeline. That makes FilmCraft interesting as a free engine for automated video tools, even before it is ready to replace Premiere for people.
